A trip to Rogalin
Wednesday, 30 May 2007 11:04
It is worth going on a spring trip to Rogalin, just over ten kilometres south of Poznań. It is one of the most beautiful towns in the area.
First mentions about Rogalin are dated to the 13th century. But the years od splendour for that settlement started in the 18th century. The town was owned then by the Raczyński family. The palace complex, one of the greatest and largest in Wielkopolska consists of a palace connected by the galleries with the two  outbuildings, honorary courtyard, carriage place, stable, horse breaking-in building, the house-keeping courtyard, the Rogalin gallery and a chapel.

Only after the World War Two, the communist authorities took the estate from the family. In the beginning of the previous century, after the overthrow of the communist system, Edward count Raczyński, former President of the Republic of Poland on the refuge – gave all the estate back to the Polish nation. The palace in Rogalin became a part of the National Museum in Poznań. It is still possible to see the reconstructed London cabinet of the count Raczyński in the palace.
For the last two years there are revalorisation works conducted in the palace in Rogalin. The money for that aim come from, among others, state budget and the EU donations.

It is also possible to see a great gallery of paintings by the most famous Polish and Europea painters. There are works of: Jan Matejko, Jacek Malczewski, Stanisław Wyspiański, Julian Fałat, Olga Boznańska, Leon Wyczółkowski, Aleksander Gierymski, Maurice Chabas, Albert Besnard, Paul Delaroche and Claude Monet among others found in the collections.
Rogalin is not only a palace. It is also a great park. Park founded in the second half of the 18th century consists of the “French” and “English” parts. In the vast English park, there are three once enormous, very old and famous oaks: "Lech", "Czech" and "Rus" with the trunk circumference of even 10 metres (Lech, Czech and Rus are the mythical founders of three neighbouring countries: Poland, Czech Republic and Russia. According to the legend, the encounter which gave the beginning of the slavic countries, was to take place somewhere near Poznań).

Just behind the park there are great Warta river broads’ areas. On a few hundred hectares of meadows and broads we can admire hundreds of excellent oaks. The famous oaks of Rogalin became the symbol of Wielkopolska. They have been admired by tourists and scientists for years. Such a gathering of old, even 600 years old oaks, as those growing in the forests of the Warta river banks are nowhere to be found in Europe. For the first time they were counted in 1904. The number was 1435 the last time they were counted, 860 of which are nature monuments. The trunk circumferences reach 5, 6 metres in most of them, and quite often even 10 metres.
It would be the best to go to Rogalin by car. The picturesque route leades from the Kórnik town (about 25 kilometres southeast of Poznań). It is worth visiting the great castle and neighbouring park just next to it in Kórnik. From there it is only 10 kilometres to Rogalin. You can reach Rogalin also driving through Luboń, Puszczykowo and Mosina.
