It is worth going for a walk to the botanic garden in Poznań now. The garden, which is a research and teaching division of the Adam Mickiewicz University, is regarded to be one of the most beautiful parks in Poznań. It celebrated the 80th anniversary last year.
The Botanic Garden of the Adam Mickiewicz University was created in stages. Its first part was founded in 1922-1925 under the name of the School Botanic Garden. The second 8-hectares part, much larger, was built in 1930-1936. It includes a spacious section of plant geography and section of ornamental plants (with the main impressive entrance at Dąbrowskiego street, which we can admire until present).
After the Second World War, the garden was gradually extended. Today, the garden with plants from all over the world is spread over several dozen hectares. The section of ornament plants includes ball-shaped trees and pyramidal trees, trees with hanging shoots, colourful leaves and fruits blooming in various seasons. Here you can also admire impressive seasonal flowerbeds and perennial beds.
In the ten-hectare section of plant geography you can see over 1700 trees and shrubs of various forms and different origin (most of them come from East and North Asia, and South America).
The particular attention shall be paid to the alpine garden spread over 6000 square meters and including about 1600 types of plants from various mountain ranges of temperate zone, boreal zone, subarctic and subantarctic zone. The plants are divided in geographical and ecological sectors. There is also a very wide exposition of the Carpathian mountains and Tatra mountains flora, including 350 types of plants from their natural environments and numerous endemic plants from the above mentioned regions.
The section of rare and endangered plants is small but very important. It was created to keep the rare and endangered species of plants in their natural conditions. The section covers the area of 0.25 ha and is divided into two sectors of different habitat conditions. The north sector has been prepared for plants growing in moderately humid and humid climate and accommodates 87 plant populations of 75 species. There are 82 plant populations of 55 species in the south sector.
There are also small greenhouses in the garden where you can find plants from intratropical regions. Most of the 2500 presented species come from South America and Central America.
