The Cemetery of the Merited for Wielkopolska (Cmentarz Zasłużonych Wielkopolan)November in Poland is a month of reflection and remembrance about the deceased ? the leaves falling from the trees, autumn fogs, and All Saints? Day celebrated on the 1st of November, make us think more often not only about worldly life.

This aura also favours visits to the oldest cemetery of Poznan, a burial place for many prominent inhabitants of Poznan and the Region of Wielkopolska.

The old necropolis is situated on the Northern slope of St Adalbert?s Hill, which is only a couple of minutes walk from the Old Market towards the Citadel, in the vicinity of the Polonez hotel.

The cemetery is located in picturesque surroundings on quite a steep hillock. Among the ancient trees are gravestones from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

While walking around the cemetery pay attention to the beautiful historic gravestones and figures. Near the main entrance, you can find a Baroque figure of the Mother of God created in 1771. The cemetery also includes graves of Poznan?s ex-mayors: Szymon Wroniecki, Jarogniew Drwęski and Cyryl Ratajski, eminent doctors, including: Ludwik Gąsiorowski (1807-63), Tomasz Drobnik (1858-1901), Bolesław Krysiewicz (1862-1932). There are also the graves of Marceli Motty, a historian and author of books about 19th-century Poznan, and Hipolit Cegielski, 19th-century community worker, founder of the plants producing farming machines, and an eminent patriot.

The Cemetery of the Merited is also home to the grave of the first leader of the Wielkopolska Uprising, general Stanisław Taczak.

Also professor Janusz Ziółkowski, an eminent sociologist, senator and minister in the chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland of Lech Wałęsa was buried here.

So far, he is the only contemporary Poznan inhabitant to have been honoured with burial in this honourable venue.
