Poznan is famous for its green belt. Several dozen per cent of the city’s surface area is taken by squares, parks and even woodland. However, not everybody knows that there are over 100 different bodies of water in the city, including several lakes, which are perfect destinations for spending free time, especially given the high temperatures recorded in Poland this year.

Summer is the best season for visiting the National Park of Wielkopolska. The National Park of Wielkopolska is a large forest complex situated about 20-25 kilometres from Poznan.
The National Park of Wielkopolska is one of 23 national parks in Poland. The Park was created in 1957; however, the plans to protect animals and vegetation in this part of the Wielkopolska region have already been proposed before the Second World War. Over 7,500 ha of forest and more than 7,000 ha of buffer zone, an area around the park, constitute the National Park of Wielkopolska.

May is one of the most beautiful months of the year. After a long, grey Winter, trees become green again and everything around gleams with the colours of flowers coming into bloom. And even this year, although May is quite cool and rainy, it is worth having a walk in the Arboretum in Kórnik or Poznan’s Botanical Gardens.
Kórnik is a small town located just 25 kilometres from Poznan. The town’s main attraction is its neo-Gothic castle from the early 19th century and the beautiful park surrounding it. The Arboretum-Park is one of Poland’s largest clusters of trees and shrubs, imported there from around the world. In the 19th century, Tytus Działyński – the owner of the property – began collecting trees and shrubs and converted the area into a park in an English-garden style – characterised by loose arrangements of groups of trees, vast stretches of meadows and distant perspectives. In May, the garden offers an additional attraction: azaleas and rhododendrons coming into glorious bloom.

In the 19th century Poznan was one of the best fortified cities in this part of Europe. One can still admire the remains of a dozen or so forts and the Poznan Fortress. |
