The authorities of Poznań and the Wielkopolska Voivodeship met with the group of athletes from the region who will represent Poland at the Olympic Games in Beijing. During the meeting, the Mayor of Poznań granted the awards of PLN 15,000 (nearly EUR 5,000) to the Olympians and of PLN 10,000 (slightly more than EUR 3,000) to the Paralympians from Poznań as a token of recognition for having qualified to the world’s greatest sports event with the hope that the granted help will contribute to their best preparation to the competition and the worthy representation of Poland and Poznań. In the more than one hundred-year-long history of the Olympic Games, athletes from Poznań have won only one gold medal. In 2000, during the Olympic Games in Sydney, Szymon Ziółkowski won the gold medal in the hammer throw competition. ![]() |
