Poznań will compete for the right to organise summer Univesiade, i.e. the Olympics for student sportsmen, for the fourth time.

After a defeat in competition for organisation of Universiade in 2011, the city will try to be elected as the organizer of the event in 2013.
Poznań has been trying to organise summer Universiade for several years. However, the city did not manage to win competition in consecutive years: 2007, 2009 and – recently – in 2011. The following cities turned out to be better candidates: Bangkok in Thailand, Belgrad in Serbia and Shenzen in China.
Nevertheless, every year new sport facilities appear in Poznań. It was appreciated by the member of the Executive Committee of FISU, who have visited the city.
Thanks to its efforts to organise summer Universiade, Poznań obtained support from the state budget for construction of, among others, a city stadium and a complex of swimming pools at Matlańskie Lake. The city budget contributed additional funds for construction of new sport facilities. These activities will result in further modernisation of the football stadium, which is to become one of the Euro 2012 arenas, and construction of Olympic pools.
Decision concerning the organiser of summer Universiade 2013 will be made by the FISU Committee at the beginning of 2009. Earlier, throughout 2008, the candidate cities will be visited by the Committee members. At the moment we do not know which cities will finally stand for competition to organise summer Universiade 2013. Unofficially it is said these cities might be Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Madrit in Spain. Both of these cities plan to compete for organisation of summer Olympics in the future. Universiade could be for then “a final rehearsal”.
