95 years of the Warta Poznań Sports Club.
Tuesday, 12 June 2007 13:34
Exactly on June 15  falls the 95th anniversary of the establishment of the Warta Poznań Sports Club. It is one of the oldest Polish sports clubs.
Warta is the first indigenous Polish club that was established in Poznań. Earlier there originated in the city clubs of German character (in 1912 Poznań was a part of the Prussian Empire). The club’s name refers to both the river that passes through the city and the symbolic ‘guard’ (‘warta’) that the members of the club were supposed to stand on. Green and white became the colours of the new club.
Between the First and Second World War the club reached its golden age. At that time Warta was one of the strongest sports clubs not only in Poznań but in Poland. In 1929 the footballers in the green-and-white shirts won the Polish Championship (in 1947 Warta won this trophy for the second time). Many of the players from Poznań later became part of the Polish national football team. One of them, Fryderyk Scherfke, played in the World Championship in 1938 (Scherfke scored a goal in the match that Poland lost to Brazil 5:6).
The post-war period was the time of crisis for the Warta  Poznań football section. Since the 1950s the team plays mainly in 2nd or even 3rd league. Only once, several years ago, and for a short time the footballers in ‘green-and-white’ colours moved up to first league. Today the team again plays only in 3rd league, however, with great chances to advance to the higher league.
The crisis of the football division does not mean the demise of the entire club. Other sport disciplines came to the foreground. The swimmers and fencers of Warta Poznań have been in the world’s lead for many years. It is enough to mention Rafał Szukała, the swimmer of Warta Poznań, who has represented Poland in the Olympic Games three times. Szukała is the first Polish swimmer who won the title of European and World Champion. During the Olympic Games in Barcelona (1992) he won the silver medal.
A world-renowned fencer, Małgorzata Wojtkowiak, who started her great career in Warta, has taken part in the World and European Championships as well as the Olympic Games.
Despite being 95 the ‘Warta’ Poznań Sports Club is still in good shape. Besides the footballers, swimmers and fencers, its colours are also represented by canoeists, tennis players and field hockey players.
