The Ice Racing Tournament of the Golden Somersaults prize
Friday, 21 January 2011 21:15

A strong winter has appeared to be the ally of the organizers of the international motorcycle racing on ice ?Ice Racing?. The tournament took place on the first days of January at the frozen surface of the Malta Lake. The motorcyclists raced for the Golden Somersaults prize. Even the unexpected thaw did not hamper the tournament organization. The sheet of ice was so thick that the tournament was held without any problems.

The winner of the tournament was Harald Simon from Austria who minimally overtook at the finish line the contestant from Poland-Grzegorz Knapp. The special guest of the Poznan tournament was a triple world champion in speedway ? an Australian, Jason Crump.

The ice racing is very popular in the North States of the USA, Canada and in the Scandinavian countries and the former Soviet Union republics. Usually contestants race on the artificial ice rinks. The rules of the ice racing are the same as for the speedway. Only the motorcycles look different a little. For security reasons the tyres are equipped with a few-centimetre spikes, the wheels are considerably built-up.
