For the second time, Poznań is competing for the right to organise the Summer Youth Olympic Games.
The Polish Olympic Committee has recommended Poznań’s candidacy to organise the second edition of this event, which will take place in 2014.Other Polish cities who tried to obtain the national nomination were Katowice, Szczecin, Łódź and Kraków. The shortlist of Poznań’s rivals will be announced after the 1st of April this year. Presently, a desire to hold the Summer Youth Olympic Games has been expressed by the National Olympic Committees of China, Indonesia, Mexico, Morocco, Poland and Turkey, and the International Olympic Committee has confirmed the candidatures of Jakarta (Indonesia), Nanjing (China) and Poznań. Poznań has already been a candidate to organise the 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2010, but the IOC granted the right to organise the event to Singapore. The host of the Summer Youth Olympics in 2014 will be announced in February 2010. Unfortunately, Poznań authorities had to give up their endeavours to obtain the right to host the summer Universiade – the Olympics of academic sportsmen and sportswomen – in 2015. On account of the world economic crisis the Polish government was unable to grant Poznań financial guarantees for the minimum amount of €20,000,000. The authorities of Poznań, however, have already announced that the city will try to gain the right to host the Universiade in 2017. So far the city has attempted to gain these rights three times. In 2001 Poznań lost to China’s Shenzhen, Thai Bangkok in 2007 and Serbian Belgrade in 2009. Photograph – the Polish Olympic Committee’s logo |
