In the second leg of the first round, which the team played on its own pitch, Lech defeated Austria Vienna. The winning goal, which put Lech through, was scored in the last minute of extra time.

The teams that advanced to the 2nd round of the UEFA Cup were divided into 8 groups of 5. Lech Poznań is in the same group as: Deportivo La Coruna (Spain), AS Nancy (France), Feyenoord Rotterdam (Netherlands) and CSKA Moskwa (Russia). Teams will play 4 games , 2 of which will be played on their own pitches and 2 away from home.During the draw, it was decided that the teams that will play in Poznań are: AS Nancy (6 November) and Deportivo La Coruna (4 December). The players from Poznań will go to Moscow on 27 November and to Rotterdam, Netherlands, on 17 December. The best three teams will qualify for the next round.
