St. Andrew's Day on November 30 is the occasion for the so-called 'Andrzejki' party.
On the eve of this day, i.e. on November 29 in the evening, for hundreds of years single women have been divining when they are going to get married. The most traditional fortune telling methods include pouring wax, first shoe over the threshold and peeling the apple. In the first method you pour melted wax through the hole in the old key into the bowl of water. The wax figure assumes various shapes. At first glance it may remind you nothing, but its shadow cast on the wall will tell us what to expect in the coming year. The second method requires the participation of several girls. They place their left shoes one after the other. The owner of the shoe which first touches the room's threshold may expect a speedy marriage. The third 'peeling' method consists in guessing the first letter of your future husband. In order to learn it you have to peel the apple so as to make one long peel. Then you need to throw it behind you through your left shoulder and it will lie on the floor shaped in the first letter of the beloved's name. The Andrzejki fortune telling have lasted through the centuries and, although nobody really believes in them nowadays, people are willing to take part in the games. During home parties, in pubs, students' clubs or school parties on the eve of St. Andrew's Day the girls are willing to pour wax, place their shoes in a row and peel the apples. For it is worth while to use every possibility of having fun. ![]() |
