Some have oranges, others have tomatoes, while we have? potatoes, or pyry, the equivalent of British ?taters. This inconspicuous bulb of indefinite colour and shape has become the symbol of the capital of Wielkopolska. That is why, during the first weekend of September, city residents will celebrate the day of their favourite veggie for the seventh time. The idea behind the Pyrlandia Days surfaced during the preparation to the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of granting Poznan its city charter. After the first edition of the event, the readers of the Gazeta Wyborcza daily counted Pyrlandia Days among the best elements of the city?s jubilee. From then on, every year, several thousand Poznan residents enjoy themselves at this largest city fair, propagating the cuisine, culture, jargon and customs of Wielkopolska. The festivities with taters in the spotlight include such fixtures as traditional potato-based dishes: pyry z gzikiem (poached potatoes with cottage cheese), szare kluchy ze skrzyczkami (potato dumplings with cracklings), plendze (hash browns) and even tater cookies. In 2007 a tater monument was unveiled in the Łęgi Dębińskie Park. All games and competitions of the fair revolve around taters, including tater toss and meeting with Tater-Pirates or the football potato harvest. There would be no good fun without music. This year on the stage we will see Strachy na Lachy, Myslovitz, Pablopavo, Alians and Kumka Olik. And when the music stars leave the stage and let the real ones shine, the time will come for a fireworks display sponsored by the Wielkopolska-based Solidarność sweets factory. The event will take place on Sunday, September 5th. After a year?s break it will be celebrated in its original location, Łęgi Dembińskie. Patronage: City of Poznan, 2016 European Capital of Culture candidate city. |
