Sting to open the stadiumOver two years before the inauguration of the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, the Poznan Municipal Stadium is about to be commissioned. This is the first stadium at which football players will be fighting for the Championship title in 2012. An official opening ceremony, which will take place as soon as September the 20th, will be graced by the presence of Sting, who will give a concert.

The modernisation of the stadium on ul. Bułgarska began in January 2009, and within the period of one year and nine months, the sporting facility has undergone a complete metamorphosis. The last finishing works are ongoing. It is now an ELITE-category stadium that will host three Euro 2012 group matches. The city invested PLN 713 million in the modernisation of the stadium, making it a modern, multifunctional, safe sporting facility that holds nearly 46,000 people. It is all-seated, with 266 seats for the disabled. Four membrane-roofed stands the colour of natural silk make up the solid shape of the structure. The installation of the roof structure was an unprecedented event in Europe, a spectacular architectural and logistic enterprise.

Poznan Municipal Stadium also boasts the two largest outdoor screens in Poland. They consist of 120 LED screens, each measuring 116 square metres. Until now, the record was held by Warsaw’s Riviera students’ house and the Spodek arena complex in Katowice. With a level of illuminance reaching 2000 lux, the stadium meets HD broadcast standards. But its designers didn’t forget about ecological solutions either – Rainwater will be accumulated in huge underground tanks and then used to irrigate the pitch and water other plants.
