A Centre for Bioinformatics and Genome (ECBiG) was established at the Poznań University of Technology, in the cooperation with the Poznań University of Technology and Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Science.
The Center, founded in 2007 by the Poznań University of Technology and Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Science Consortium has so far operated in the dispersed form. Four laboratories equipped with modern specialized testing appliances will be established on 500 sqm. The idea of creating a center combining genome and bioinformatics research has been implemented for several years. The grants acquired by the consortium members have already enabled the purchase of specialized equipment. A set of devices and computer programs was completed. The task of the ECBiG is to conduct basic research as regards bioinformatics and genomics, development and implementation of new and existing research methods, practical use of obtained results in medicine, biotechnology and agriculture. At present, within the ECBiG, works concerning, first of all, the DNA, RNA and the protein analysis in the research of human genome and selected plant genomes, therapeutic use of RNA technologies and the application of bioinformatic methods are being carried out. In future, the results of the research conducted in the ECBiG will allow for using personalized medicine in treatment of cancer and virus diseases through adjusting the medicine to the genetic profile of a given person. The "Enlargement of the Infrastructure of the European Center for Bioinformatics and Genomics" project in the value of PLN 9.98 million (over EUR 2 million) has been completed with the participation of funds from the European Regional Development Program under the Innovative Economy Operational Program. |
