Doctor honoris causa for Hans Dietrich Genscher

This year's beginning of the new academic year at the Poznań's University of Economics was connected with granting the title of doctor honoris causa of the university to Hans Dietrich Genscher, former Foreign Affairs Minister and deputy chancellor of Germany.

The University Senate awarded this title on application from the Councils of Faculties of: Economics, International Economy, Informatics and Electronic Economy, Faculty of Commodity Science and Management of the University of Economics.

Hans Dietrich Genscher was distinguished in recognition of his extraordinary achievements in foreign politics, in particular for his input in negotiating the settlement recognizing the border at Oder and Nysa rivers as the Polish-German border, adopted by both countries in 1991, in recognition for his actions towards the international détente and conclusion of the "cold war", for participation in international negotiations, enabling the peaceful process of uniting Germany, our neighbour and major economic partner and for supporting reform forces in Poland at the end of the 1980s.

Hans Dietrich Genscher, as a politician, was connected with the liberal FDP party. In the years 1974 - 1992 used to be deputy chancellor and foreign affairs minister of Germany. He led the policy of communication with East Germany and policy of détente between the East and the West. He supported the reforms of  M.S. Gorbatschow. He led to conclusion of treaties sanctioning the union of Germany, the border treaty with Poland (1990) and the treaty on withdrawing the Soviet Union Army from the territory of former East Germany.
