Friday, 15 October 2010 13:03

Inauguration of a new academic yearAfter a holiday break the Poznan higher education institutions have ceremoniously inaugurated the new academic year. Poznan is one of the biggest Polish academic centres. There are 25 higher education institutions here, including eight state-owned universities and colleges, with around 140,000 students. Experts have estimated that every fifteenth Polish student studies in Poznan.

Within the last 15 years as many as 17 private higher education institutions have been established and the number of students has increased 3.5 times. The biggest higher education institution is the Adam Mickiewicz University where every third Poznan student studies.

For comparison, before the Second World War Poznan had only three higher education institutions: the University (with the Humanities, Agricultural and Medical Departments), the Business Academy (the predecessor of the current University of Economy) and the Higher School of Machine Building and Electrotechnology (today?s Poznan University of Technology).
