The City of Poznan is supporting a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan who represented Poland at the showroom of young prospective designers during the world?s largest furniture trade fair, the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2010, held in Milan a few days ago.

Karolina Tylka (photo: City Hall)Graduate of two Academies of Fine Art, one in Poznan and the other in Berlin, Karolina Tylka created, with Szymon Nawoj, architect, the Beyond design and research initiative whose main goal was to design and implement innovative solutions in pattern designing. Her design catalogue includes very original concepts, ideas and products. At the same time, all these creations are characterised by high levels of utility. For instance, Karolina designed light switches to be produced by the blind or the sand-blind, which took into account their special skills and predispositions, or a fan performing the function of an interactive screen to enable intercultural communication.
For several years now Karolina Tylka has been participating in the DEEDS ? Design Education for Sustainability international project, co-created by people from Denmark, England, Germany and Poland. DEEDS promotes sustainable development in the fields of architecture and design, and conscious education of designers in this area. The project is supported by BEDA, the Bureau of European Design Associations, which organises training sessions, workshops and conferences.

The main object exhibited by the Beyond studio at the fair in Milan was a modern cabinet where china nearly floated in the air.
?The designers? ambition is to propose alternative solutions which break the stereotypes and introduce a new quality to everyday life,? argues the designer.
Designed of glass, MDF, carton and paper, the furniture and object set allows exhibition of home tableware in a surprising manner, adding a new quality to the kitchen and dining room space. When presented by the Beyond, the modern version of the cabinet which has accompanied us for ages cunningly escapes all schematic modes of perception of this piece of furniture.
The designer draws her inspirations mainly from customs, social and cultural transformations and dynamic interpersonal Communications which provoke her to search and respond to new needs and desires. This explains her numerous trips to far-away and nearby nooks of the world. During her studies, this Poznan inhabitant moved several times from the capital of the Wielkopolska Region to the capital of Germany. She also lived for a while in the United States of America. ?All journeys form essential pieces of my experience, and also in terms of design. Becoming acquainted with different cultures enriches the workshop, helps to break stereotypes and makes you more sensitive. After the diploma examination in Berlin, I decided to come back to Poznan to keep on working here,? explains Karolina Tylka. ?The city offers good conditions for the development of design. Besides, I have the impression that it?s close to everywhere and I will always be able to set off in search of inspiration,? Tylka admits.
The Beyond initiative confirms that in Poznan it is possible to execute projects pointing to the key role of pattern designing in the modern world. The atmosphere of the city causes every design-related initiative to be met with optimum development conditions. Large trade fairs, design studies, design management studies or events involving the inhabitants in direct and active participation in design goals, means that design lives in Poznan, and the city lives with design.
