 Music at the “Zamek” Culture CentreThe fact that summer has come does not mean that cultural life in Poznan is coming to a standstill. On warm summer evenings concerts and shows of Polish and foreign artists will be organized at the “Zamek” Culture Centre’s courtyard. The incredible atmosphere of this place will certainly encourage artistic sensations.

The first concert is planned for the 5th July. Gaba Kulka – an amazingly talented artist, endowed with an original voice will be performing then. Gaba has already received many awards - she is a winner of the Fryderyk award, the most prestigious award in the Polish music industry,  in the category of “Female Vocalist of the Year”. Gaba participated in the recording of the album entitled “Herbert” including Zbigniew Herbert’s poems which was published on the poet’s 85th birthday. Gaba has been drawing her inspiration from Kate Bush and Tori Amos. The artist herself refers to her style as “progressive pop”.

Malta Festival Poznan 2010On its 20th anniversary one of the most important theatre festivals in Poznan changes its name and format. But the fans of the Poznan theatre fair have nothing to worry about: like every year, at the turn of June and July the Poznan parks, squares, halls and courtyards will turn into theatre and concert stages.

This year the Poznan festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The event started as a street festival to become one of the most important artistic festivals in our part of Europe.
From now on it will not be the International Theatre Festival but Malta Festival Poznan. Why is that?

Poznan June 1956In June 1956, at the time of the Stalinist terror, Poznan workers claimed “bread and freedom.” 100,000 workers of the biggest Poznan plants participated in the demonstration. The communist authorities suppressed the rebellious citizens in a bloody manner. The death toll was placed at 70 people, and more than a thousand sustained injuries.

02_zdj2Introduced in Poland in the mid 1940s, the Stalinist system brought the dictatorship of the communist part, limitation of activity for a number of organisations, forced collectivisation of rural areas, liquidation of private trade and craftsmanship. The opponents of the new Polish political system were persecuted by the communist secret police. In Poland, at the beginning of the 1950s, numerous arrests, imprisonment without court decisions, show-trials and extortion of testimonies with tortures were the order of the day. The people’s dissatisfaction was magnified by difficulties in obtaining food and worsening work conditions. At the same time, the authorities raised working standards, forcing people to be more efficient.

A gigantic transparent cube, full of the cultural atmosphere of Poznan, will stand at Plac. Wolności. The installation constitutes a part of the “Odetchnij Kulturą” (Breathe in Culture) all Poland image campaign which, for the first time, will show the inhabitants of Poland that Poznan is not only the centre of business and the host of important sports events but also an ideal city for those thirsty for artistic sensations.

The weekend of the Dogs’ competition19th and 20th of June will be dominated at the Cytadela park with Dog Frisbee, exciting kennel sport which, apart from a man and a dog, involves a plastic disk of Frisbee. The best specialist in this field will compete at the 5th jubilee Dog Chow Disc Cup, a series of Dog Frisbee events taking place in five Polish cities which, for the first time, include Poznan.
